Parish Nurse Scheme
This is a national initiative which is validated by the Government, is a registered Charity with an impressive Board of Reference.
The concept is to create a team within the parish, of people with medical and health related skills and expertise.
The team has to be headed by a recognised Parish Nurse; this would be a NHS nurse with a current registration and number, who would be willing to go on a residential course for a week (paid for by the Parish) and then gather around him/her people who could work within the parish on a variety of health and related issues.
Jesus knew and understood the connection between body, mind and spirit so well. He taught and healed in the principle of the whole person.
We know too that certain stress factors can affect our health and that a wrong lifestyle can affect us greatly, and those around us.
It is a multi layered concept but at it's heart it shows the church really cares for people, values the working skills people have and that the church does not just want to get in for numbers or always asks for money.
It also says that we need to be a healthy people for God!
We had an initial meeting in April with the Founder member of the scheme and the North West representative who leads a Parish Nurse scheme in Stockport.
We heard many different ways in which the scheme could be implemented.
Blood pressures taken after the morning service (Oh, I love'd that one!), advice given by a pharmacist in the congregation on various drugs and side effects, risk management of falls for the elderly, advice on palliative and cancer care, and to young mums and much, much more. All of us were really enthused and excited and St David's are they may well be part of this too.
So, if you can offer anything or you are interested in joining this new team, please let me know!
